The killing of two Catholic sisters, Srs. Mary Daniel Abut and Regina Roba in South Sudan has shocked members and supporters of the Solidarity with South Sudan project. The sisters were South Sudanese and members of the Sacred Heart Sisters of Juba Archdiocese. They were returning to Juba by bus after attending centenary celebrations at a parish in the eastern Diocese of Torit. The bus run into an ambush of armed men who opened gunfire on them.
These sisters were well known to FCJ Sisters who live and work in South Sudan or are on the board of the Solidarity with South Sudan project. Our sisters have received hospitality and support from the Sacred Heart Sisters in Juba, particularly during difficult and violent times. We FCJs pray for Srs Mary Daniel and Regina and the other victims of the ambush, and for the Sacred Heart Sisters of Juba, the people of South Sudan, and the work of the Solidarity with South Sudan, where so much good is being done.
The Solidarity with South Sudan project is a collaborative commitment of religious institutes of men and women, members of the Unions of Superiors General and the Church in South Sudan. It aims to create self-sustainable educational, health and pastoral institutions and programs that will help to empower South Sudanese people to build a just and peaceful society.
