Submitted by FCJ Companion in Mission Mary, from Melbourne
On Saturday 21 September, coincidently also Marie Madeleine d’Houët’s birthday, Melbourne Sisters FCJ and Companions in Mission gathered to hear about Sr Paola’s ministry in Manila, before she leaves for Europe.
All listened with great interest about Sr Paola’s work, coordinating the FCJ Learning and Development Centre in Barangay Bagong Silangan, Manila. Sr Paola shared that here is where many people live in small, simple houses near a large garbage dump. Unemployment is high, and many residents make a living by scavenging and selling what they find at the dumpsite, few have stable jobs outside the area.
Sr Paola said the FCJ Centre is always busy, with people constantly coming and going. The staff are very dedicated, with most of them being from the local area and having a deep understanding of the community’s needs. It was humbling to hear Sr Paola speak about the wide range of services and programs. It was very clear that the FCJ Learning and Development Centre works hard to support the people of Barangay Bagong Silangan and improve their quality of life.
We all warmly farewelled Sr Paola fcJ as she now embarks on a new chapter in her life.
The FCJ Learning and Development Center was founded by the Sisters FCJ in 2002 near one to the dumpsites in Manila. It offers an integrated community development program to communities in Barangays Bagong Silangan and Payatas, Quezon City, serving more than 750 families. Visit FCJ Learning and Development Center on facebook. Watch a video to see their work and involvement in the Bagon Silangan community.
