Religious Congregations Affiliation in Ende (FKKR) invited sisters, brothers, and religious priests to a gathering for the first time after a long absence during the pandemic. Taking place at the Holy Spirit Sisters (SSpS) convent, we began the meeting with introducing ourselves, then there was some input about the human trafficking in Indonesia, especially in the Ende region, given by Sr. Wihelmina Kato, SSpS (Justice and Peace Coordinator for the Holy Spirit Sisters.
After a coffee break, we discussed what action or contribution should come from the religious community to deal with this issue. The group decided on a joint action plan. It was agreed to hold a talk show on the issue of human trafficking which would be broadcast on the Radio Republik Indonesia on 26 July.
Another idea was to have a night of a thousand candles on Anti Human Trafficking Day, 30 July. The purpose was to pray for communal awareness of the dangers of human trafficking and to raise awareness of the need for people to become a dignified workforce. Dignity here means being an official worker who has complete documents, so that he/she will be entitled to receive reasonable and humane treatment and fair wages as a worker. After the prayer and reflection, all the participants were invited to light the candles. I attended with the three FCJ aspirants and we joined this activity with great enthusiasm. It was a meaningful moment for us.
