St. Philomena School, in Portsmouth RI, had a wonderful week celebrating Catholic Schools Week from January 27-31, 2020. The theme for the week was the FCJ Bicentenary theme:
God- Beauty, Truth, and Goodness – is doing everything!
Each day of the week had a special theme too.
Monday was a Day of Gratitude which began with a beautiful liturgy prepared by the Grade Three students. The music teacher, Mr. Craig Spaner had adapted the FCJ Bicentenary Song, We Follow and We Serve, for young voices. Mr. Spaner sang the verses, the students sang the refrain. Before Mass began, Principal Brian Cordeiro explained to the students in the upper grades that they would be receiving the FCJ Bicentenary book when they left mass. The teachers already had the books and were prepared to help the students understand the importance of the booklet and how to use it! Mr. Dan Baker, Sr. Imelda Toomey fcJ, and Jen Abbate, an FCJ Companion in Mission, presented the books to the students as they left the auditorium.
Tuesday was Companion Day. In September, each grade is paired with younger grade for the year. On Tuesday, teachers found time to get their classes together to share a fun activity. In the afternoon, the parents provided an ice cream treat for everyone.
Wednesday, was Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. Once again the parents worked together to provide a delicious lunch for the teachers and staff.
Thursday was a Day of Prayer… and time for all sorts of games for the students in Grades 3-8.
Friday was School Spirit Day. Throughout the week, each classroom was decorating their classroom door around the theme of God – Beauty, Truth, and Goodness – is doing everything! Board members were invited to judge the doors for prizes awarded by Mr. Cordeiro. The doors were creative, and inspiring!
