The First Companionship Awards in Irish FCJ Schools — June 2010

As the school year draws to a close in the Irish schools, it is time for awards and for the first time,  the new Companionship Awards were given at the Limerick City Schools of Laurel Hill Secondary, Laurel Hill Coláiste (pictured below) and at FCJ Secondary School, Bunclody, Co. Wexford. To read about the institution of the award click here

The Companionship Trophies are made from bog oak, that is from the roots of oak trees dating back thousands of years. Making the trophies in this material reminds us that companionship connects us to the very roots of FCJ ethos.  Read more about bog oak here

The Companionship Trophies are given to the students who, in the words of the citation,  personify companionship, gentleness, compassion, courage and confidence.  The students who receive the award have expressed  these values through an attentiveness to the needs of others, - by being actively engaged in developing an inclusive community in school and by their care of the environment

There are a couple of interesting historical notes about the recipients of the first Companionship Awards in FCJ Secondary School, Bunclody(Both students are pictured above, together with Mrs Frances Threadgold, Principal).

One is a great grand niece of Sr. Julia Fitzgerald fcJ who was a member of the Bunclody Community all her life and who died in October 2000. The other student is a direct descendant of the family of carpenters brought from Wales to Bunclody many years ago, to work on a  new mansion being built for the local landlords, the Halldares. When the house was completed and the family was about to return to Wales, they were employed by the FCJ community for the carpentry in the Boarding School extension.  By the time this was completed the family had formed relationships with the local community, settled in the town  and never returned to Wales.

May a spirit of strong companionship thrive in all FCJ Schools!
