Sacred Heart Convent FCJ celebrates 125 years — Calgary, Canada

Monthly Celebrations continue to mark the 125th Anniversary Year at Sacred Heart Convent, Calgary.

January began with a Mass honouring the Holy Name of Jesus.  This was attended by many friends and associates. The February event was an Open House, featuring History Displays. This took place on the last day of the month, Sunday, February 28, and deserves top billing.

For weeks ahead of time Elizabeth Fitzgerald, (left in the photograph below) Provincial Archivist, her assistant,  Pat Molesky CIM, (centre right in the photo below) and others planned and prepared, and on the eve all who could, gave a hand with the final touches.

The result of all this labour of love was a wonderfully stimulating and heart-warming afternoon of reminiscences, meetings of old classmates, teachers, friends , colleagues, FCJ family connections and new friends who were only too happy to accept our invitation to come and get acquainted.  Shortly before this, the Calgary Herald had devoted a page to an interview with Bonnie Moser fcJ. This helped arouse interest in the story of the FCJs. Cards, good wishes, floral tributes and donations witnessed to the gratitude and appreciation of many for the work of the Sisters and the Centre. The superb displays fascinated the many visitors.

There were  many old photos, including former students and FCJ sisters from the early 20th century to the present.  The embroidered vestments, hand-painted stoles and tabernacle-curtains were much admired as were the 19th century monstrance and chalice. There was appreciation of the best parlour with its beautiful furniture, and the dinner-table set for six guests, with the best damask, china and silver.

There were refreshments in the large dining-room where our guests relaxed and chatted. Over 200 responded to our invitation in spite of the fact that the Olympic Gold Medal hockey game between Canada and the USA was on at the same time.

It was a truly memorable jubilee event! Congratulations and thanks to all involved in planning and preparing it.
