Visit of FCJ Bunclody Senior Orchestra to Rhode Island, USA
February 10th – 17th, 2012
In the Autumn of 1983, the FCJ Secondary School Bunclody Orchestra was founded by Music Director, Gearóid Grant, and school Principal, Sr. Margaret Quirke, fcJ. The Orchestra gave their first public recital nearly 28 years ago, on 7th April 1984.
Today there are three FCJ Bunclody orchestras and the Senior group of 96 pupils has just returned from an exchange visit to the Mount St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI.
The first contact between the two schools came about through a telephone call in 1994 between Sr. Madeleine Ryan fcJ, principal of Bunclody school, and Sr. Ethna Earley fcJ in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The result of this first phone call, which enabled the meeting of two dedicated and passionate music teachers, made today’s successful exchanges possible.
Seventeen years and eight exchanges later, there have been benefits to both students and staff on both sides of the Atlantic, not least of which are enduring friendships and the real experience of a different culture and people. It has all been very worthwhile.
