Chair of Governors at Upton Hall FCJ School, England, awarded MBE

Professor James Keaton, MBE.Professor Jim Keaton has been awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honours list for his services to Heritage in the North West of England.

Throughout his time as Governor, Professor Keaton has used his network of business and academic contacts to offer pupils a range of opportunities to meet highly successful people in situations that facilitate conversation and debate. The speakers we have had in School to speak to the Sixth Form, thanks to his efforts, include:  Lord Judd (House of Lords), Rt Hon Paul Goggins MP (Minister of State for Northern Ireland), Professor Barry Plumb (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Manchester Metropolitan University), Mrs Cherie Blair QC, Mr Ben Chapman MP, Mr Tony Benn MP, Ms Esther McVey, MP, Dr Wendy Piatt (Director General, The Russell Group), Dame Lorna Muirhead (Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside), Miss Carol Makin (President - Royal Society of Medicine, London), Lady Sheila Newby (Honorary Ambassador, Liverpool University). Many of these speakers have lunched with groups of Sixth Form students.

Professor Keaton arranged for members of both Houses of Parliament to meet groups of our students and show them around the Houses of Parliament, to talk about the operation of government and make them feel as though they could and should aspire to be leaders and innovators.  In turn these older students shared their experiences with younger pupils so that the impact was widely felt.

Professor Keaton also works with Governors and the Leadership Team to share his experiences in the business world and to encourage best practice in appointments, value for money and long term planning.  In particular he has encouraged the school to regard itself as an international institution capable of networking with other schools and organisations across the world.  The School has International School status and has a Confucius Classroom, the latter in recognition of its excellence in the teaching of Mandarin Chinese.

In his role as Chair of Governors, Professor Keaton has used his skills for the betterment of the young people in the community and in particular to open their eyes to the opportunities that exist for those with belief in themselves and a sense of purpose.  His energy and optimism have inspired a hard working and talented staff to turn a good school into an outstanding school and to support the Senior Leadership Team to work with determination to meet the challenges of the present and to plan for further success in the future.

The FCJ Sisters and all associated with Upton Hall School
offer Professor Jim Keaton prayerful  congratulations
