Hurricane in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA
April 27th, 2011

Devastation in Tuscaloosa neighbourhood; FCJ home shown in upper right corner. On April 27th, 2011 powerful tornadoes ripped through Alabama killing more than 200 people in their path.

In Tuscaloosa, the neighborhood where the FCJ Sisters lived was not spared. The Sisters' home, while badly damaged, was the only home in their immediate vicinity left standing. A nearby mall and condominium were destroyed completely.

Fortunately the FCJs were all away at the time and feel blessed that they missed the worse. They are extremely grateful for friends and colleagues who went to their house in the devastated neighbourhood to make sure they were safe and who then rescued the Blessed Sacrament and packed some of their personal valuables. Computers and important documents were safe, but the community's new car was buried under large trees in the back yard. Over the next three days friends, colleagues and students helped to pack up what furniture, etc., that could be saved. A couple, both Companions in Mission, offered the FCJs hospitality in their home.

Helen, Ellen and Madeleine just before leaving their home for the last time. The new car was found in the rubble, but is extensively damaged.

We pray for everyone affected by this disaster as they try to rebuild their lives.
