FCJ Secondary School Bunclody visited

On 24th January 2011, FCJ Secondary School Bunclody had the privilege of a visit from the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese . She was accompanied by her husband, Dr. Martin McAleese.
A guard of Honour lined the route as the Presidential party arrived at 11.00am. She was greeted at the front door by Ms. Frances Threadgold, Principal as the brass section of the senior orchestra played the “Presidential Salute”.
The President was introduced to Mr. Joe Byrne (Chair of the Board of Management), the Provincial, Sr. Maria Dunne,and the former principal, Sr. Madeleine Ryan.
She was then introduced to other members of the Board of Management, members of the Parents' Council, and members of staff.
After this, the President went down through the school where she met many students from the different classes including the two teams who were so successful in the recent Young Scientist National Exhibition.
In the Concert hall, she addressed the gathering there. Present were 5th and 6th Year students, staff past and present, members of the Board of Management and the Parents Council.
Presentations were made by a 2nd year boy who gave her a bird table & feeder that he had made himself and the Head Girl and Head Boy presented a watercolour painted by a past pupil.
In her letter of thanks to the President, the Principal, Mrs. Threadgold summed up what the visit had meant to the school when she wrote: Your presence in the school and your empowering address lifted our spirits and provided us with an opportunity to reflect on and be proud of our ethos as a 'Le Cheile' school of the FCJ tradition.
