Closing Celebration for Árd Scoil Mhuire FCJ, Bruff
28 April 2012

On Saturday 28 April 2012 a Commemorative Day was held as part of the rituals of closure for the school. A Mass of Thanksgiving to commemorate the 156 years of FCJ Education in Bruff from 1856 - 1912 was celebrated in the parish church.

Photos taken in the cemetery. The Mass was attended by locals, past pupils and many FCJs.  The homily and speeches were so positive in recalling what the school had meant to so many.  After the Mass, a plaque was erected in the church to commemorate the 156 years.  Later there was a  prayer service at the Convent cemetery where so many FCJs were buried.

Photographs and Memorabilia from the past were laid out in the classrooms.  The photos in particular were of great interest as they helped many to recall past and happy times.

A commemorative book was on sale and the 400 copies were rapidly sold out.  Many were disappointed not to be able to get a copy but were reassured that there would be a reprinting and a copy would be forwarded to them.

A musical gathering rounded  off the day. It was a lovely day as so many people recalled a very well-loved era of education from which they had greatly benefitted.  It was no surprise when later the local papers said there were in excess of 1,000 people there that day.  The day  was a fitting and worthy tribute to the work of the past.
